Chandigarh is the 1st planned modern city of India designed by the French architect Le Corbusier. Chandigarh and the area surrounding it were constituted as a union territory on 1st November, 1966. It serves as the joint capital of both, Punjab and Haryana states. It is bounded on the north and west by Punjab and east and south by Haryana. Total area of the union territory is 114Sq.Km.
Much of the beauty owes to the planning of the city in sectors with houses which conform to a modern design and its grand Secretariat and Assembly buildings were build according to Le-Corbusier's plans and a picturesque lake was also created along with the Shivaliks. The genius of Nek Chand led to the creation of one of Chandigarh's landmarks the 'Rock garden', and a rose garden also came up. It is one of the most attractive cities of India. It has a large lake i.e. Sukhna lake, with beautiful picnic spots.
Sukhna Lake
The 3 sq kms manmade Sukhna Lake is an idyllic retreat for a communion with nature.Sukhna lake is the Favroite place for the lovers as it attracts migratory birds from places like Siberia and elsewhere. Developed as the best place for Family's dayout Sukhna Lake is Chandigarh's Famous Picnick spot.
People can be easily seen following there exercise regime and daily walk around The Sukhna Lake,Chandigarh at morning and Evening time. Night in Sukhna Lake gives a beautiful scean of the tiny lights of the small areas like Kasuli,Parvanu etc from the mounatins near Chandigarh.
Rock Garden
The world-acclaimed Rock Garden, dotted with sculptures created from scrap materials and unusual rock formations, is Chandigarh's pride. Created from discarded concrete and tiles, this unique garden spreading over 64 acres showcases urban art and offers a quiet spot to relax. Created in the 1970's by artist Nek Chand it is indeed a fascinating amalgam of nature's marvels and man's creativity.
Rose Garden
Rose garden of Chandigarh, India is the largest of its kind in Asia. Named after India's former President, Zakir Hussain, this beautiful garden was set up in 1967 with the support of Chandigarh's first Chief Commissioner, late Dr M S Randhawa. Chandigarh rose garden contains more than 17,000 plants. There are nearly 1,600 varieties of roses over there. It is a spacious garden covering an area of 27 acres. Dr. Zakir rose garden not just consists of the gorgeous roses. Rose garden serves as the venue for hosting the annual festival of gardens, a major cultural event of the city.
Chattbir Zoo
Chattbir Zoo is Located 5 kms from Chandigarh on the Chandigarh-Patiala Road. Chandigarh Chattbir Zoo is a famous zoological park located at a distance of houses hundreds of different mammals, birds and reptiles. One of the major attractions of Chatbir Zoo near Chandigarh is the lion safari. Royal Bengal tiger is the pride of Chattbir zoo and if you are fortunate enough, you might be able to catch its glimpse. Visitors are taken on the adventurous trips to the tiger reserves, where animals roam about freely. You can also find distinctive species of birds over here.
Pinjore Gardens
Pinjore Gardens is Located 20 kms from Chandigarh. When it comes to excursions around Chandigarh, Pinjore gardens deserve a special mention. Also known as Yadavindra Gardens, they are situated about 20 kms away from the city. The work of creating Pinjore gardens began in the seventeenth century. It covers a total area of 100 acres. Chandigarh Pinjore Garden serves as the venue for hosting the annual event of mango festival. The garden houses a mini zoo, historic places, Japanese garden, nursery and a number of picnic spots. According to the Hindu mythology, it is said that it is over here that Pandava brothers had rested during their exile.
Kasauli
Kasauli, a pocket of paradise in the Shivaliks, is an enjoyable and accessible getaway from Chandigarh. Developed by the British in the 19th century, the town retains the charm of a colonial cantonment with its quiet cobbled sun-dappled paths lined with cottages, orchards and tall old trees. With a cool fresh mountain breeze tinged with the scent of pines, soothing bird song and quietude, Kasuali is an ideal destination for a rejuvenating holiday. At night the plains below morph into a mesmeric sea of twinkling lights.
